The Plaxico Curress

What's that? You want me back on the team? But it's my turn to make license plates!!

The New York Giants have to look at this season in two ways. What happened, and what could of happened with their elite wide receiver Plaxico Burress.

How could have the Giants season ended if Plaxico hadn't finally crossed the line of annoying to illegal by accidentally shooting himself in the thigh with an unlicensed gun at a nightclub. As ridiculous as that sentence sounds, the Giants season was deeply affected by arguably their most talented player... shooting himself in the leg. In fact, it may have ruined it.

His actions forced the team to suspend him for the final four games of the season. Even worse for the talented Burress is the New York City police department looking into the possibility of bringing him to court. The city's law on loaded concealed weapons carried in public is a mandatory 3 1/2 year prison sentence.

In prison Plaxico may become a talented wide receiver as well, or at least a receiver of some sort.

Best yet... after fans flooding the air waves of popular sports talk radio stations about how they don't need Plaxico, how they are better of without Plaxico, it has now manifested into...maybe we can take him back.

Good Riddance, until we lose.

Fans can only wonder how things would have been different had Burress been there when Giants lost their divisional playoff game to the Eagles, 23-11. Of the final four games of the regular season, the ones played without him...three were losses, and most observers agreed that without Burress on the field, there was no need to double cover any of the other Giants' receivers.

That left more defenders assigned to the run, something the Giants weren't prepared to deal with in the time given to adjust.

Damn that Plaxico, if he had only stuck to his normal misbehaving ways of missing practice and being late for team meetings Giants could be playing Arizona this afternoon.

So the New York Giants won the NFC East, finished with the best record in the conference , set a franchise record with an 11-1 start...and lost their first playoff game to a hated rival. They are no longer the defending Super Bowl Champions and now face a long offseason trying to offset the Plaxico Curress.

What we have here is a case of an extremely talented and very well paid athlete making a very poor off the field decision and of course this isn't the first case nor will it be the last. Personally I have nothing against Burress carrying a firearm just as long as he did it legally and it was licensed. But he made the foolish decision to tote an unlicensed gun and then accidentally shoots himself in the thigh at a nightclub. Makes alot of people wonder what the hell was he thinking or if he was thinking at all. One problem on top of another only compounds the troubles up ahead.

It's bad enough to have terrible habits of missing team practices and showing late to meetings but the shooting of one self in the leg at a nightclub brings more controversy and baggage to Burress and the New York Giants franchise. It's never a good time to do any thing detrimental to yourself that's going to take you off the playing field and leave your team without there most talented wide receiver.

Plaxico's future is uncertain and the Giants are currently in a long offseason looking back at what could have been or what should have been. It's going to take some great effort and time to get over this "hangover" of sorts and proceed to carrying on with their business.
